Atheist Moms

In the atheist arena there tends to be little support for parents. Sure, there are a number of Facebook groups geared towards atheist parents, but many of them are currently abandoned. When they did post content they typically only posted memes belittling religion rather than offer support to help guide parents in the complex world of parenting.

Support for atheist parents should not solely evolve around the subject of religion. Atheist parents are regular people who are dealing with hardships like anyone else, from child behavior issues to financial pressure to stress. They are also people who celebrate special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays.

This is where the organization Atheist Moms steps in, founded by Lauren Ell, who is also the founder of Christian Atheist Society. Based on Ell’s observations, Atheist Moms is the first organization of its kind to exist.

After Ell welcomed her first child into the world in October 2019, she started searching for organizations and groups that were established for atheist parents. She found a number of them on Facebook, but they did not discuss parenting issues she was concerned about. Instead they simply posted memes joking about religion. They also did not have much activity happening, many having been neglected for years.

She turned to Youtube to research pregnancy and childcare advice. She noticed there was an abundance of religious moms who published content but did not come across one outspoken atheist mom. She appreciated any content that gave her insight into childcare, but she did think it would be nice to come across atheist mothers.

This led her to launch Atheist Moms, an organization she envisioned that would actually provide a wide spectrum of support to mothers all over the world who identify as atheist. Yes there would be discussions about hardships with religion, but there would also be discussions about children’s music, finding ways to relax and dealing with post partum depression.

Additionally the organization would offer atheist moms the opportunity to connect. One opportunity they have to connect is to submit an atheist profile of themselves to be published to the website. Atheist profiles allow supporters to learn more about each other and to relate. They are also welcome to submit blog posts to be published.

While Atheist Moms does have an American foundation, it is open to mothers all over the world who identify as atheist. It will be great to see mothers from different countries to communicate and connect. Most of all, it will be wonderful to provide a wide spectrum of support to help parents do their best in raising their families.
